The reason so many photographers feel stuck isn’t because they lack talent; it’s because they haven’t done the work to understand who they are creatively and professionally.
Photographers often start by bouncing between weddings, seniors, fashion, fine art, chasing likes, trends, and other people’s definitions of success. For example Ringing Bell has done portraits:

But none of that matters if you’re not aligned with your why. This industry will chew you up if you’re only chasing the next cool thing, instead of building a brand around what truly drives you.
You have to ask yourself: What kind of work fulfills me? What kind of clients do I enjoy working with?
If you’re introverted and prefer quiet, intimate moments, maybe high-volume weddings aren’t for you. If you love storytelling, maybe editorial or seniors is where you will shine. It’s not just about the image, it’s about who you are and what kind of shoot makes you smile. That is important because you won't include love in the images if you don't love the experience.
And here’s the kicker: your genre isn’t just a creative choice, it’s a business decision. Choosing a path that aligns with your personality will help you market authentically, build trust with clients, and stand out in a crowded space.
So if you’re struggling right now, don’t panic. Sit with it, reflect, test. Then double down, and repeat.
Clarity comes when you stop pretending and start building with purpose.
Every successful photographer you see didn’t get there by accident. They got hyper-focused, not just on their craft, but on who they serve and why. That’s what makes your brand magnetic. That’s what allows you to build something sustainable, not just something that looks good on social.
You’ve got to stop chasing trends and genres, hoping your image will go viral. Instead, lean into the one that fits your personality, your lifestyle, and your goals.
Once you get aligned, it is what will allow you to grow with confidence, deliver better work, and attract clients who rave about you.
I am not even close to an expert, but maybe you should start by asking the hard questions. What excites you? What drains you? Who are you at your core, not just as a creative, but as a human being? When you answer that honestly, the right genre won’t just appear; it’ll make sense. That's not to say you won't want to change genres over time, so now stop waiting, start building. It’s time to take control of your business and your mindset.
